I live in the East Midlands, and currently run two Holistic Therapy practices in the area. I started my new career as a Complementary Therapist in 2004 at the tender age of 45! My Father had always had a fascination with Complementary Therapies – in particular, Homeopathy and Reflexology. He would often speak with passion on the subject. Unfortunately, he never had the opportunity to study, but I firmly believe he would have made an excellent Therapist; a very wise and gentle man. The ‘spark’ of interest had been in my head for many years! Due to an unexpected change in my own circumstances, I found myself perfectly placed to study Reflexology and subsequently set up my practice. I soon found that one cannot live by Reflexology alone, and over the years I have studied and currently practice Reiki, Indian Head Massage,  Ear Candling, Therapeutic Paraffin wax treatment – and have recently qualified in Acupressure with the School of Natural Health Sciences – more of which later.

Starting up as a Therapist can be a very lonely task at times, with some harsh lessons to be learned along the way! I take pride in the fact, however, that I have advised several new Therapists regarding their businesses, guiding them on the right path for success – but without encountering the same problems I had faced in the early days!

I am still, at times, staggered by the effectiveness of Holistic/Complementary Therapies. I recently worked with a man who had no mobility or sensation in his left arm for 4 years – since he suffered a severe crush injury to his shoulder. By the time he came to me, he had undergone pretty much all conventional tests and treatments possible. Using a combination of Complementary Therapies, he recovered 95 % mobility and sensation. This took 10 months with fortnightly appointments – but there was visible improvement at each treatment. This profession can be extremely satisfying!

As a busy Therapist, finding regular time to study can be very difficult – in particular attending regular training sessions at college can be virtually impossible. I was determined however to add Acupressure to my established treatments. This is where The School of Natural Health Sciences (SNHS Ltd) comes in!

Having searched for flexible home study courses, I decided that the best course for my circumstances was provided by SNHS – flexible, no set time to complete assignments, work at your own pace, no pressure, flexibility on fees, and good communication. Assignments were sent by email in groups of three;  when the assignments were returned and marked by the School, the next batch of lessons would be sent out.

As Therapists or Students we should all acknowledge that passing a course represents the beginning of one’s journey rather than the final point.

The SNHS course in Acupressure provided me with a good foundation on which to build.
