Analgesic Effect

Fivefold objectives of Acupressure

The best-known effect of acupressure is the pain relieving effect or the analgesic effect. Acupressure can relieve pain and can prevent the crippling deformities that often develop in musculoskeletal pain problems including arthritis and headaches, and can restore function and return one to activity within a short period of time. It is particularly effective in allaying pain, which is mainly responsible for causing distress in patients and owing to the lack of any specific treatment in western medicine the patient has to depend on strong potent drugs, which can have very harmful side effects The large intestine4(Li4) is a well proven point to relieve the patient from any kind of pain.

Fivefold objectives of Acupressure

The use of acupressure in postoperative pain was investigated in a study published in the Clinical Journal Of Pain in 1996. In this study, which involved 40 knee surgery patients, one group received acupressure (15 acupoints were stimulated). Within an hour of treatment, members of the acupressure group reported less pain than those in the control group. The pain-relieving effects associated with acupressure lasted for 24 hours.

Sedation or Tranquilizing effect: The stimulation of certain acupressure points result in sedation The sedative powers of acupressure were investigated in a study published in the Journals of Gerontology in 1999, which involved over 80 elderly people who suffered from sleeping difficulties. Compared to the people in the control groups, the 28 participants who received acupressure were able to sleep better. They slept for longer periods of time and were less likely to wake up during the night. The researchers concluded that acupressure improves the quality of sleep in older adults. It also helps the calm the patient under conditions of stress / anxiety and cases of shock.

Maintaining The Ying Yang Balance

Fivefold objectives of Acupressure

Acupoints, which are located just under the skin along the meridians, are tiny energy structures that affect the flow of Qi (life force) through the body. These palpable recesses located on the surface of the body are conceived as openings of energies. When these points are pressed they result in many therapeutic effects. When qi either stagnates and becomes disturbed or accumulates in excess along one of these channels, stimulation to the acupoints, which are sensitive to pressure, can unblock and regulate the Qi flow through toning or sedating treatment. The various homeostatic mechanisms in the body like blood pressure, heart rate respiration, temperature, metabolic rate and other vital parameters are restored to the original state of equilibrium by acupressure.

Fivefold objectives of Acupressure

Dr. Anton Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka has scientifically propagated Gate Control Theory of relieving pain (through complex physiochemical process). He has also explained Motor Gate Theory that helps in motor recovery and regeneration of motor cells. Motor Gate Theory explains well how a cure through acupressure is affected for recovery of musculoskeletal system. It hastens the motor recovery in patients who have become paralyzed from one cause or another. It has shown amazing results in neurological diseases like, facial paralysis, headache, migraine, trigeminal neuralgia, incomplete paralysis after apoplexy, peripheral neurological diseases, intercostals neuralgia, Epilepsy, vertigo, Bell’s palsy, multiple sclerosis, hemiplagia, paraplegia and muscular and nerve system diseases
